In-class Meetings: Thursday 11:00 in CSS 2324, January 26 through May 10
(2324 is in the old, east, wing of CSS; map)
Exam dates: Feb. 23, Mar. 29, Apr. 26 and May 12 (the final exam, at 8 a.m.).
Exams are held in the classroom. See the schedule for a list of units and dates.
Grades: 80% of your grade will be based on three hour exams and a final. Exam grades are normalized in order to weigh all exams equally and rank students in the class fairly, but your final letter grade will be based on how well you do individually. The remaining 20% of your grade will be based on the weekly online quizzes used to follow your progress through the online material.
Blackboard is used to distribute online content, including lectures; and for discussions, review, announcements and the posting of grades.
Course documents on Blackboard are organized by Unit.
There is a Course Wiki that will be used to post the latest information about the current unit and when your online assignments are due.
Texts
Required: Advanced Genetic Analysis: Genes, Genomes and Networks in Eukaryotes
Philip Meneely
Oxford University Press.
Recommended: Hartwell et. al, Genetics: From Genes to Genomes, 4th edition.
You will need this or a similar secondary text for some units.
Additional readings from the literature or online may be assigned or suggested by fellow students and will be made
available through blackboard.
Internet access is required.
Lectures: Lectures and other online content for each week will be posted sometime after Thursday of the previous week and Monday.
Online quizzes for each unit should be taken by by the date specified (Tuesday through Friday).
Points will be taken off for failure to attempt the quiz by that date and for failure to pass a quiz by the time of the next exam.
The quiz due dates are specified on the Course Wiki.
Groups: Each student is assigned to two groups with about 17 other students for collaborative review.
Online quizzes for each unit should be taken by the date specified on that assignment.
Some weeks will have multiple units; each unit will have its own quiz.
Points will be taken off for failure to attempt the quiz by the specified date and for failure to pass a quiz before the end of that section (the date of the exam).
Please make sure that your official University email address is an address at which you actually read mail. If it isn't, you can make changes through Testudo. If you don't know what your official email address is, check the LDAP Directory. Special note: we have found that email sent to AOL accounts is often delayed, or never delivered at all, and we encourage you to find a more reliable alternative if you are using AOL (we can send mail to multiple accounts if you ask us to).
Office Hours (Steve Mount):
4:30-6 on Monday, in my office (2109 HJP)
If you plan to come, please let me know so that I expect you (or so that I can tell you if I can't make it that week).
In class sessions on Thursday will provide ample opportunity to discuss the material.
I also answer questions posed by email. In many cases, answers to email questions will be shared with the class
In addition, meetings are available by appointment. The grader will be available after graded material is handed back so that you will have chance to discuss the grading of your assignments.
Advice from students who did well in a previous year. I asked the students who did best in the class to share how they prepared for exams (bottom line: it's a good idea to read the book, and that is still going to be true in a blended course).
