Lab People
Carlos
A. Machado , Associate Professor
Dean Croshaw (Postdoc in Arizona) works on reproductive isolation mechanisms and postmating gene expression in females of Drosophila
Carlos Flores (PhD student) is interested in the evolution of disease vectors and parasites. He studies different aspects of molecular evolution in Trypanosoma cruzi.
Zi-feng Jiang (Postdoc) studies transcriptome evolution in Drosophila.
Ellen Suurmeyer (PhD student in Arizona) is interested in molecular evolution of organisms associated with figs and mechanisms of fig gall formation.
Laura Rascon (Lab technician) graduated from the University of Arizona and worked in Gio Boscos' lab before joining our lab in Maryland.
Lab Alumni:
Sarah
Cavanaugh: General Biology major and UBRP student (2004-2008). Sarah is now a M.S. student in Forensic Science at Towson University.
Katy Davis: MCB major (Fall 2005-Spring 2007). Worked on molecular evolution of Trypanosoma cruzi. After graduation she went to work at the Hubbs-SeaWorld Research Institute in San Diego.
Dalziel Dominguez: EEB major (Fall 2006-2007). He conducted experiments on longevity, and dissecation and starvation resistance in Drosophila.
Victoria Duckworth: EEB major (Fall 2007-2008). Worked with Anna Himler on fig population genetics.
Anna Himler: PERT postdoc (Spring 2007-Fall 2008) working on divergence population genetics of sympatric species of Neotropical figs. She developed microsatellites for studies of species divergence in Ficus. She is now working with Molly Hunter (Entomology, University of Arizona)
Erica
Hudson: EEB major (January 2004-May
2005). Honor’s Thesis “Coevolutionary
History of Neotropical figs and their pollinators”. She is now a PhD student at the University of South Florida.
Kristen
Jacobs: MCB major (January 2004-May 2005). Honor’s Thesis “The history
of hybridization in Trypanosoma cruzi”.
July
Kelley: MCB major and UBRP student (May 2005-October 2006). Independent
study: “Testing for the presence of endosymbiotic bacteria in fig
wasps”.
Erin Kuroiwa: Physiology major (2007-2008). She worked with Dean Croshaw on his Drosophila mating experiments and also conducted experiments on dissecation and starvation resistance in Drosophila.
Wendy
Marussich: PERT postdoc (2004-2008). Worked on the evolution of Neotropical
communities of non-pollinating fig wasps.
Whitman
Schofield: lab technician (July 2003-July 2004). He
is now a graduate student at Yale University.
